Imagine a field thick with tall goose grass, so dense you have to cut your way through… Then imagine that the plant not only sticks to you, but gives you paper cuts… Then imagine that the paper has been dipped in glue and then broken glass, and tears open, rather than cuts your skin. Welcome to our slightly unwelcoming new world of Walking the Amazon.
Cho and I are joined by Pete Casey, a very generous individual who has been sponsoring us for the past few months. In exchange for this kindness we agreed to allow Pete to walk with us for three weeks. Although we will endeavour to look after Pete, he walks very much at his own risk.
A quote from Pete today:
“This is definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done, I didn’t realise it would be this tough. You have to experience this to believe it; words could not do it justice.”
As I write this, Pete is tucked up in his hammock with some anti-histamines to calm his inflamed, bite-ridden body. He’s just washed in an excavated hole in the swamp floor and eaten dry harine for supper. He’s got just 20 more days to endure
Thanks to a “critical satellite alteration” by Inmarsat, my internet unit no longer supports data, so this blog is relayed by telephone. We will update the ‘firmware’ in Coari at the end of the month.

Hi Pete, Ed and Cho Glad to hear you have arrived Pete and all is well :o)
Pete, I am sure you will feel better tomorrow when the anti histamines kick in, hopefully the cuts from the plants wont hurt too much in the morning though.
Very very proud of you Pete and genuinely wish I was there too.
Be strong and above all enjoy.
Simon
I’m glad you’re all ok. Take care.

Ed and Cho,
Sorry to hear about your computer. We hope you get a new one soon. Are you having fun with your new travel companion? We hope you only have a few cuts from the grass. Maybe you could use the razor grass as a weapon?
We made a environment survival guide in class that may help! It is on our class website.

What is the most intreging find yet in the amazon and what inspired you to do this walk … was it to get a record or just hobbie
Read about your epic journey in Hello Mag. I am 56 years old female living in North Carolina - but as a teenager it was my dream to explore the Amazon, by boat. Am SO impressed with your perseverance! Will be following your journey and rooting for you.
