Taking Sam out gave Cho and I a break. So why is it that we are weaker than we have ever been? It’s a serious question that we don’t have an answer for. Cho, being South American and therefore not expressing his weaknesses as readily as me, has also admitted he doesn’t know what is wrong with us both.
Days that would have been marched out without blinking are becoming laboured and slow. Each step is heavy and apathy taunts us all day long.
We are carrying slightly more weight now that Sam’s gone, and the topography has certainly started to undulate but we are meant to be seasoned and conditioned.
If we don’t have a virus of some kind I can only presume it is a combination of chronic exhaustion and slight malnutrition. Cho commented yesterday that he used to go into the jungle in Peru with nothing but rice for the week. My reply was that that’s OK for a week, or even a month, but severely limit your diet to white rice and cheap processed fish scraps (labeled tuna on the can) for a year and perhaps we are starting to see the outcome.

The Amazonian Brazilians here are the big positive of the moment. Children and adults alike welcome us into their communities with honest smiles. That said - this morning an old lady did ask me whether I was here to kill the local people and slit their throats. When I said I wasn’t she smiled and seemed happy to let us pass…

Hey Ed,
I hope it’s just exhaustion and temporary. Dig deep within if the need arises and you’ll find the antidote to whatever it is.
Wishing you the best in days and months to come. Bon Voyage!

Be gentle on yourselves and your surroundings and the rainforests will show themselves as your and our life-support systems.
I am with you in spirit and would love to be right there too - mud, mosquitoes, back ache and all.
Hey Ed, Cho,
I’m not a doctor but it sounds like you could have an iron or B deficiency, maybe some supplements will help? I say that lightly like there’s a pharmacy around the next corner!
It could also be the psychological effect of the fact that you are more or less half way - it’s something that runners will be familiar with when engaging in an ultra-marathon, you dip mentally and then pick up once you start leaving the halfway mark further behind.
Keep walking, we’re rooting for you!
Hang in there, guys! I recall feeling completely wiped out tramping through rugged terrain in the Amazon as well. It’s probably a combination of everything — exhaustion, heat, moisture, diet, the monotony of the jungle. I hope you get a chance to rest for a few days. Would probably do you good. I salute your courage and perseverance. We’re pulling for you!!

Hey Ed and Cho -
Keep charging lads… although it sounds like you need some rest a few good meals. Wishing you the best. Hope you got a chance to see/read the whole Mens Journal piece. You guys continue to amaze me. I still hope to get back to walk more with you and do a follow up.
God speed, Pete
Hang in there. I currently serve on a nuclear submarine, and a couple of months ago under the water a few friends and I decided to traverse the Amazon by boat next year. Through our research we ran across your story, and it has become a story of motivation for us. We are rooting for you, and are following your progress intently from the depths!
I can’t believe that someone is actually doing this. I find it incredible what you are doing and wish you luck as you trudge through that great forest.
Hello mate,
I think its just that you miss me really! Also you dont have the added bonus of looking at me and thinking, “Well, at least I am not as tired as him.”
Keep it up mate, i am sure you are doing fine, enjoy the experience and try to forget the tough bits.
Hope to speak to you on Skype soon.
Take care and send my regards to Cho,
“ONCA PINTADA!”
Sam
really do you like walking in the jungle with friends snakes and pumas?

what a experience, it seems to me that you need a little rest, you have to hear the voice of your body too…its telling you to rest a bit….eat aguaje its a very good resource of vitamin B- A and also has some minerals, try to have fruits and castañas, now is time for them….! look for them..!
they also grow in the wild…..!
good luck and take good care of yourselves
My bet is that it was a virus or maybe some other parasite. Can’t be that you’ve been doing this for over a year, feeling strong all the time, and then this happens to BOTH of you.
